I decided that I wanted to get myself something for Christmas as I am now done shopping for everyone else. (Finally!) There were some items on ModCloth.com that I have been drooling over. I am not one to drop dough on things over a certain price, but I broke down. After the semester I've had I felt like I deserved a treat. So I bought myself a pair of size 7 Spotlight Heels in Brown and a super cute pair of Grey Peacock Feather Tights. Merry Christmas to me! :)

Crafty Update

I decided to make some glitter rings tonight instead of doing homework. It was a good call, if you ask me. I needed a break. What a perfect way to relax than to make jewelry. :)

Last week I took yet another break from my homework to make coasters. We have a make-shift coffee table consisting of two end tables pushed together. My boyfriend's incredibly talented mom made them. (See below for another piece of furniture created by her.) To preserve the finish on the tables, I decided to make some smart-ass coasters. Images were designed by me while in a sarcastic mood. (You've been warned.)

Josh's favorite is the rooster coaster. Gee, not surprised. LOL

Stress & The Blogger

Stress. We all experience it in one shape or form. Rarely do we blog about it, though. My [previous] personal choice for not having blogged about stress that I am dealing with (or trying to deal with) was fear. No one wants to appear weak, especially when that person writes a blog about their handmade works, art, and other happy shit that every blog author thinks their audience wants to read about.

Currently, I am taking 15-semester hours. This semester I transferred from a 2-year college to a 4-year university and switched my major from Psychology to Graphic Design with a minor in Psychology. You could say I'm a fan of psychobabble and trying to gain insight into others. This switch in majors pushed back my graduation date to December 2013, and that's if I take and complete 15-semester hours each semester and take at least 6 to 9-semester hours during the summers. (Keep in mind I at the Junior-level in course credits.) I also made a decision to move-in with my boyfriend, which requires me to hold and maintain a job. I will not mention the company I work for by name, since my opinions in this blog are my own, but I will say that they are a major arts & craft supply selling company found nationally within the United States.

I am a busy person! Although I am stressed out, I understand and try to help those around me who are also overwhelmed by what is happening in their lives. I feel as though I have a moral obligation to my fellow human beings. I'm one of those people who -- even though I'm typically running late to class -- helps a complete stranger pick up their books if they drop them in the hallway. I do not like to stand by and watch others struggle when I know there is something I can do to help. Even if there isn't much I can do, I still feel I should try or at least throw a warm smile their way to help brighten their day. But digress...

At first, I thought publishing this post was a dangerous move. But then I thought about how I would rather be honest with my readers and tell them exactly how I am doing, and not just post some pretty pictures of cool crafts. I may be overwhelmed with life, even to the point of skipping sleep to get an art project done, but that doesn't mean I won't be able to make and ship out orders when I promise to send them out. I think that a lot of indie blog writers are afraid of being honest with their readers, because they do not want to lose them or make them think in any way that they cannot handle their own small business. We all have struggles in life, we just have to find a way to overcome them. Writing and sharing my stories with others is just one of the ways I cope with my stress.

Sweetest Day Explained

Sweetest Day was something completely new to me when I first moved to Kentucky a year and a half ago. The locals called it a 'second Valentine's Day'. I found this incredibly annoying and costly. "But now Valentine's Day is no longer special. Why two days a year with similar themes? This sounds like a ploy thought up by the candy companies," I exclaimed. No one seemed to have a clear explanation for this strange holiday. My boyfriend even tried to convince me that it was a holiday just for guys and that I was supposed to shower him in gifts. Yeah, that's when I decided to do some research.

According to The Cleveland Plain Dealer (October 15, 2005), celebrated on the third Saturday in October, Sweetest Day's conception was pronounced as October 8, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio. The first Sweetest Day was planned by a committee of 12 confectioners chaired by candy-maker C. C. Hartzell. The Sweetest Day in the Year Committee distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy to "newsboys, orphans, old folks, and the poor" in the Cleveland area.

Okay, so it turns out I wasn't far from the truth about the inception of Sweetest Day. I figured I might as well do something for the occasion. Since I didn't have a whole lot of time to make anything I bought my boyfriend his favorite dessert (cheesecake), added his favorite candy as a topping (Peanut M&Ms), and made sure the candies were his favorite color (green).


There! Now no one can say I'm a bad girlfriend.

So yes, I gave into the candy company's master plan of selling more sugary sweet insulin spiking goodies. And man, were they tasty. All this blogging about candy is making me crave sweets. Since 2007, I have been wanting a scooter (149cc or higher, preferably). A friend of mine - who is a huge scooter enthusiast - took me out for rides on his Stella, and ever since I have been hooked! Still holdin' onto the dream of owning one, but college is expensive and takes all of my precious monies. If I don't get one before I graduate (December 2013... give or take) then I plan to buy myself one as a graduation gift.

Re-purposed Vintage Suitcase

Okay, so apparently I am terrible at remembering to write blog posts about my craft projects. There has been a lot of positive feedback and buzz about the $9 vintage wooden suitcase I re-purposed and turned into a booth display slash jewelry box back in March of this year. In the future, I will try to be better about posting these things sooner.

The original photo of the jewelry display was posted on my Flickr account back on March 4, 2010. (My Flickr account can be seen HERE.) Since then it has been marked as a favorite by 15 different people and written about in the blog-o-sphere a few times. One of the blogs the suitcase was featured in was Monkey And Squirrel - a super cute blog about life, fashion, four legged friends, and craftiness. It was also mentioned in the Zach Anthony Fashion Blog. The third posting I found (thanks to Google searches) was in the BrightHub.com's Green Living section in Amy Carson's article.

Materials:

Suitcase or box with a top
Ruler
Upholstery foam
Box cutter
Opaque fabric (any color you want - I chose white to keep the focus on my rings)
Patterned or scrapbook paper - Make sure not to use any distracting colors or patterns that will take away from the jewelry pieces. Neutral colors work best.
Pen or pencil
Scissors, or straight line paper cutter
Elmer's glue
Mod Podge decoupaging glue
Paint brush for Mod Podge
Small nails (for hanging the necklaces on)
Hammer
Optional: Stamps or paint to decorate the outside

Instructions:

Measure the length, width, and depth of the bottom inside portion of the suitcase or box. Cut the upholstery foam to fit into the box, but make sure it is a little snug around the sides so as to prevent it from shifting, especially if you're going to tote your suitcase around to shows like I do.
Next, use your box cutter to cut horizontal slits into your foam. I separated my slits 1.25 inches from each other, so I could put in larger rings. Then, place the foam into the box.
Whatever the length and width is on your foam, double it for the fabric. It's best to use opaque fabric to keep the green colored upholstery foam from showing through.
Tuck the fabric into the foam, starting with the center-most slit, then work outwards to tuck the rest of the foam into the other slits. Once the fabric is tucked into all of the slits, tuck the remaining fabric into all four outside sides of the foam. Viola! You have a handmade ring display.
For the back upper-most inside part of the suitcase or box, measure the inside wall. Then use your pen or pencil to draw the measurements on a patterned piece of paper (I used scrapbook paper). Next, you will use a straight line paper cutter to make neat cuts along your drawn lines, or you could always hand cut the paper with scissors if you do not have a paper cutter handy.
Glue the backside of the cut out paper onto the back wall of the suitcase or box where you drew the measurements from.
After 30 minutes, the glue should be dry. Now you can coat a layer or two of Mod Podge over the paper to seal and protect it. Mod Podge also leaves a nice clean sheen.
After 30 minutes of letting the Mod Podge dry, hammer in a few nails near the top part of the paper to hang necklaces or bracelets off of. Be sure to space out the nails to give room for your hanging jewelry.
If you want to decorate the outside of the jewelry box, grab some paints or stamps and decorate it any way you prefer.

There you have it, folks. Your very own handmade jewelry display for shows, gifts, or personal use. Hope you've enjoy this tutorial. :)

Delivering Happiness

I was selected to receive an advanced copy of Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh's book Delivering Happiness: A Path To Profits, Passion, And Purpose. In exchange, I promised I would write an honest review of the book upon reading its contents. I also received a second advanced copy of the book to give away to my lovely readers. You lucky ducks! ;)

First off, I would like to begin by saying how down-to-earth Tony Hsieh appears in his entirely self-written book Delivering Happiness. The book reads like you're peeking into an old friend's journal. The stories Tony shares are personal and very relatable. It made me feel like I could take on the world. He used a quote in the book by Thomas Edison, that I myself use when thinking about my own business... "I failed my way to success."

I felt a bit nostalgic when he mentioned going from door-to-door trying to sell things to his neighbors as a child. When I was in grade school I remember creating these handmade bookmarks that sold for $1 each. I had a deal going with my teacher that each time I made an A on her test she would laminate a stack of them for me to better preserve the artwork and provide my customers with a better quality product. I just hope one day I'm as successful as Tony has turned out to be. But such is life, things hadn't always turned out according to plan. Being an entrepreneur is about trial and error, as Tony reminds us. At one point, Tony goes on to include an email he forwarded to all of his employees at Zappos. In the email he states how the company had to regrettably lay off 8% of their employees and possibly close some of their Brick & Mortar stores. Regardless of the downfalls every business sees during operation, there were also big rewards, like how Zappos was acquired by Amazon in a deal valued at $1.2 billion on the day of closing in 2009.

If you're looking to read a book written by a very successful and inspiring CEO that doesn't throw big business jargon in your face, then be sure to pick up a copy of Tony Hsieh's Delivering Happiness. You won't regret it. The book officially launches today June 7, 2010 so pick up a copy for yourself (and for a friend) at a local bookstore, or through Amazon.com. Every once in a while I come across something, or someone (or in this case, someones) that truly inspire me. Since Artsy Tarsty Jewels was founded in 2008 -- out of my apartment -- I have been daydreaming about what a joy it would be to open my own Brick & Mortar shop. I've often imagined how I would decorate it, and how I would add other handmade artists' work to the shelves and modern painted table tops. Chris and Keith of Fred Flare have turned this dream into a reality for their famous brand. And what an inspiration their Brooklyn-based shop is! Can you say, "Holy cute"!?

Back in late-November 2009 we had to temporarily close the Etsy jewelry shop due to our move from Texas to Tennessee. Every time I mention this I feel like singing George Strait's "All My Ex's Live in Texas" (That's Why I Hang My Head in Tennessee). Yeehaw!

{Busy Week}

A busy week is being had. Today was my first day back as a barista after a couple of years--those 'coffee-slinging-free-years' were filled with being a corporate drone--and I'm loving it! I've always enjoyed making tasty beverages for people. I feel like a caffeine addiction enabler. Hurray for java jolts!

I am currently uploading 459 photos taken today [after work] of earrings, bracelets, and necklaces for the Artsy Tartsy Jewels on-line shop. I figured I would cease this opportunity to write a quick blog. Still more photos to be taken. Geez! After that some more uploading, then possibly editing in Picasa. Love that free program, highly recommend it. Then, I have a lab paper to write for Abnormal Psychology that is due tomorrow. Also, I promised a friend, and hopefully future freelance employer, that I would read the first draft of his novel Pray. If all works out I will be his copyeditor. Hurray for editing! I think I'm one of the few people I know that actually enjoys whipping out her red marking pen to correct grammatical, spelling, and sentence structure errors. It's sad how it gives my life some meaning.

{Web Development Slow Moving}

A few days ago I did what most artisans usually end up doing. I paid for a website domain to showcase and sell my work. It didn't cost a whole lot, but the site development process seems to be stealing a bit of my soul. Yes, I'm attempting to create a web site all by myself. Dumb! I'm sure other people are great at these skills, but I am lacking.

I feel like I've been spending countless hours toiling away at content writing (the easy part), re-learning html, and learning how to use PhotoShop for web page building. I'm too stubborn to trust anyone else with the look and feel of my website, so I guess I just need to suck it up and keep on keepin' on.

{The Age of Denial}

It's funny how some people are able to claim they are 29 years old for 3 plus years at a time. Do they know about some time machine that I am not aware of? I wonder if these people are afraid of a friend snagging up their drivers license when they have it out at the bar (assuming they still get carded). Also, I find it a little odd when these individuals are obviously in the "age" of denial when they have 2 plus children, with the eldest being over 10 years old, and knowing for a fact that they did not get married until they were 21 years of age or older without previously having children.

Why is this odd, you ask? My response would be, they're afraid they'll be deemed as old, no longer attractive, or whatever their insecure case may be. I have no idea why these individuals feel this way. Some of the most beautiful women I know are over 30. They have more confidence, they have longer standing knowledge of skin care, etiquette and how the world works. More so than I do at a mere 25. I understand not all--and possibly most--women over 30 are not as classy as I described. There are some that still cling desperately to their much younger counterparts in hopes that no one will notice how much older they are than everyone else. Or these women feel the need to cause high school level drama to distract others from the fine lines in the corner of their eyes. Whatever the case may be, most people who have the observational abilities of someone with half a brain can clearly see that these women are over 30. Why not just own up to it and let it be? There's nothing wrong with acting your age.

Approximately five days ago my favorite season began... Fall! I love how Fall is not too hot, not too cold and ever so breezy. I honestly can't wait to liberate my scarf collection that I've been building up for several years. Some of my favorite scarves are the ones that have been handmade by friends. Patricia made me this gorgeous Emerald Green knit scarf that I adore. She is incredibly multi-talented. She runs The Gluten-Free Assistant blog that is full of delicious recipes and products, and has an on-line shop at PatriciasMess.etsy.com where she sells some of her hand-knit items to include hats and cool cat toys.

Since I am currently residing in the Great State of Texas I will be missing all of the lovely leaves change their colors from lush greens to a vibrant array of reds, yellows and oranges. At least here in the South the sky is still as stunning as ever.

Whenever the Fall season is upon me it usually brings good tidings of inspiration rapping on my window. I always seem to feel more creative this time of year. Just this past week I have been delving back into my old habit of writing poetry. Accidentally, I stumbled upon a site where I used to frequently post some of my poems for public viewing. "Bohemian Beauty" is just one of the bracelets from the {Serendipity} Series. This gorgeous single strand bracelet has vintage fire polished Czech glass beads linked together by wrapped silver wire, complete with a thin silver linked chain. The chain adds to the bracelet's charm and luster.

Back In Texas...

I've been neglecting my poor blog for far too long. During the past two to three weeks I've either been packing up mine and my husband's junk (he's still deployed), driving it from Colorado, or unpacking it around the new place in central Texas.

Despite everyone's banter about how I've been living in Colorado for the past year, it really has made me more susceptible to complaining about the Texas heat. I feel like I'm going through premature menopause! I've done nothing but sweat since I got here! At first, I thought I had a fever, then quickly remembered I was not in Colorado's dry climate anymore.

I may be a whiner when it comes to extreme humidity, but I genuinely love central Texas and the great city of Austin is beyond my most beloved. I've lived in Europe, had the privileged opportunity of seeing famed cities such as London, Prague, Frankfurt and Paris, but nothing compares to the quirk and charm of Austin, TX.

Speaking of Austin, I'll actually be heading down there this evening to spent time with some friends. I can't wait to have a Monster Burrito at Freebirds. One of my buddies down in Austin is vegetarian and allergic to glutein, luckily Freebirds has all sorts of alternative choices to fit just about anyone's needs. Another bonus is they have all tin foil you can get your hands on! It's a local favorite to grab up a bunch of tin foil and turn it into anything you want. Once you're done just place it anywhere throughout the restaurant. So fun! Freebirds here I come!

In-Home Inspiration

There's just something about taking black and white pictures around the home. I tend to do this when I've just finished photographing completed or in-progress jewelry projects.

Today I think I'll try some of the Kale recipes I've been collecting on AllRecipes.com. This is my go-to site for various delicious meal, treat and drink recipes. Membership is free and you can collect your recipes in your very own Recipe Box directly onto the site.

Something I baked and loved (mind you I'm not the most experienced chef) was the Tuna Noodle Casserole from Scratch. If I can make it and have it turn out delicious, anyone can do it. I made a few alterations to the original recipe. I added a pinch each of Paprika and Nutmeg, to include an 8oz. can of Sweet Peas. Disclaimer: This dish will not last long. Dig in!

Resin Projects: In The Works

Lately I've been experimenting with resin as a jewelry art form. I've used resin in the past, but its been awhile.

I'm totally diggin' this necklace! I created the heart-shaped resin pendant on the left several months ago. It was one of my first batches. As you can see there is a little yellow candy heart embedded in it that reads "All Mine".

In the following image I chose to embed single hand-cut pieces of a lace trim into the resin. First, I poured a clear resin liquid into the casting molds and let them sit for about 30 minutes until they became a little tacky to the touch, then I placed each lace cut-out on top of the first resin layer. After embedding the lace, I poured a second layer of the clear resin mix into the mold, but just enough to barely cover each lace piece.

After I let the second layer cure for about an hour, I then poured in the third and final layer of resin. For some of the pendant pieces I chose black, the others a translucent light blue. I think the colors I chose gave each piece a feminine and almost Victorian-era look to them.

The above images are of my first chunky resin bracelet. The resin was hand-poured into the mold over the paper-inlay and left to cure overnight.

These are the first coasters I have hand-poured... definitely a work in progress.

Man, I took a lot of jewelry photos! Let's just say I get a little "trigger happy" when photographing. I usually like to listen to music with I'm either creating or editing.

I was feeling home sick for Central Texas (specifically the Austin area), so I decided to tune into my favorite station 101 X through their website. I've been listening to this station since it first came out a decade ago. I was living in Schertz, TX (just outside of San Antonio) at the time, and in Elementary School. Having just typed this, I now feel old! 24 isn't too old, is it? I'm still hip... I think. Right?

Too Many Designs, Too Little Time

I have so many jewelry design ideas that I want to try out, but I have been having a hard time finding the time to develop them. If I'm not working, then I'm usually sucked into the World Wide Web browsing around while precious time is ticking away.

Twitter has become a slight addiction. I don't "tweet" (as they call it) as much as some of the people I follow do. There are some jewelry designs that I have created recently, but haven't taken any photos of yet. I'm planning on creating my own handmade light box so the photos turn out nice. Just a few purchases and an unused cardboard box and I'll be set!

For some reason this stretchy bracelet reminds me of Salmon. Yes, the fish. Maybe it's the Salmon-like pink color of the large faceted round beads? Either way this Lady Salmon Bracelet is feminine, yet very earthy. It definitely has the ability of being subtle and, at the same time, glamorous.

Slower Than I Had Hoped

When it comes to adding items to my Etsy shop, things are going slower than I had hoped for. The road block that I'm hitting is finding beads. Not just any beads, but beads used to duplicate designs I've already created.

I bought these beads here in a local Denver bead shop. I bought out all they had and still need more. I've been told by an online supplier that she hasn't seen these around the beading circuit in a while. I may be S.O.L. on this one.

These too were found in a local bead shop. The owner pulled them off of a vintage piece. I've found some online, but none in the 14mm that I need.

Hmm. Seems I'll need to do some more searching before I can take things further. If you see anything like these anywhere online let me know. It would be greatly appreciated.
